The Pros and Cons of Porcelain Veneers | Manhattan Beach Dentist

478243911There are several people that avoid smiling in public and even in general due to having a less than perfect smile. Thanks to the advances in cosmetic dentistry, there are quite a few treatments that can enhance your smile. One of the many options cosmetic dentistry offers are porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed over your natural teeth to conceal imperfections, making your smile completely rejuvenated. This dental procedure is considered quite popular when it comes to improving your smile, as the results are extremely natural looking.

Benefits of porcelain veneers:

  • No discoloration over time
  • Stain-resistant to classic stains
  • Color, shape and size are customizable
  • Extremely durable
  • Can last up to 20 years
  • Natural-looking appearance

Disadvantages of porcelain veneers:

  • Color cannot be changed once placed
  • Your natural tooth will be slightly altered
  • If broken, the whole veneer must be replaced
  • Veneers range around $1,000 per tooth

Porcelain veneers can correct a myriad of cosmetic dentistry problems, such as chipped, decayed, discolored or poorly shaped teeth, and can also be beneficial in situations where you have a slight gap, minor crowding or a mild misalignment. Unfortunately, if you have gum disease or severe tooth decay, you should have any dental problems treated beforehand to increase your chances of being an ideal candidate.

If you end up being a good candidate for porcelain veneers, let your cosmetic dentist know what your likes and dislikes are about your smile, and what you’d like to see in your new smile makeover.

Dental Veneers for a Bright Smile | Manhattan Beach, Ca Dentist

close up smile red lipstickCould your smile use a little pick-me-up? More than likely you’re thinking it could. But what are your options? Well, one of the techniques dentists use to correct the appearance of teeth is veneers – thin, custom made shells that are placed on top of existing teeth, fixing discolorations, gaps, chips, and broken teeth.

While veneers and bonding are cosmetic procedures used to treat similar problems, veneers may be a better alternative in cases where the patient wants to adjust the size or shape of the tooth. Veneers result in an amazing transformation to your smile.

A normal procedure typically requires multiple visits – on the first visit, the dentist will inspect the tooth (or teeth) to make sure the patient is a good candidate and verify that veneers will properly fix the problem at hand. During this first visit, the dentist will remove a thin layer of tooth enamel, so that the veneer surface rests even with the rest of the teeth. Once the enamel is removed, the dentist will make a detailed impression of the tooth, and send the impression off to a laboratory for a custom veneer designed to fit the tooth precisely.  The dental laboratory can make the veneer using either porcelain or resin, with porcelain veneers providing a more natural shine, and resin veneers requiring less enamel removal.

Once the veneer is created, the patient will return for a second visit.  The dentist will continue shaping the veneer, and once the veneer is the right size and shape, the newly crafted veneer will be bonded to the tooth surface with permanent cement. Finally, the dentist will remove excess cement and ensure that the patient’s bite is correct. In many cases, the patient will be asked to return in a few weeks to evaluate the gums and make sure the patients’ gums are reacting well to the new veneer surface.

Modern porcelain veneers tend to last many years, are easy to care for (normal brushing and flossing is fine, no special care is required), provide a very natural appearance, and offer a stronger alternative to other cosmetic options. Veneers can greatly enhance your smile and can heighten self-esteem.
